Getting married on Salt Spring Island.

The Salt Spring Island wedding venues in this index are farms, halls, gardens and private shoreline, all of them within half an hour of each other on an island you can reach by ferry from three directions.

Salt Spring is the creative heart of the Gulf Islands and the one most people have already heard of. Three ferry routes reach it, from Swartz Bay, Crofton and Tsawwassen, which makes it the rare island wedding where guests coming from Vancouver and guests coming from Victoria can both get there without an overnight.

What it holds is unusually varied for somewhere this size. Working farms with barns and meadows, old halls in the villages, private shoreline on the north end, and forest that runs right down to the water. Nothing is more than half an hour from anything else, so a ceremony in one place and dinner in another is an ordinary plan here rather than a logistical problem.

It is also a small island in summer. The good dates go early, accommodation fills before the venues do, and the venues that take one wedding a weekend take them a long way out.

Before you choose

What couples ask about Salt Spring Island.

How do guests get to Salt Spring Island?

By BC Ferries, on one of three routes: Swartz Bay to Fulford Harbour if they are coming from Victoria or the airport, Crofton to Vesuvius Bay from mid-island, and Tsawwassen to Long Harbour from the mainland. Float planes and water taxis run as well and are worth the money for anyone arriving the morning of. Send guests the route that matches where they are flying into, because the three arrive at opposite ends of the island.

How far ahead should we book a Salt Spring Island wedding venue?

For a summer Saturday, twelve to eighteen months. The venues that take one wedding a weekend fill first and furthest out, and accommodation on the island runs out before the venues do, so hold both at the same time rather than in order.

Where do our guests sleep?

In cottages, inns and rentals scattered around the island rather than in a block of hotel rooms, because there is no hotel large enough to hold a wedding. Work out roughly where everyone is staying before you set the ceremony time, and expect to arrange something for getting them home afterwards.

What time of year is best?

June through September is dry and reliably warm, and it is also when the ferries and the accommodation are busiest. May and late September are quieter and cheaper and still frequently beautiful, with a real chance of rain that any venue here will have a plan for.

Do we need a marriage licence for a wedding on the island?

Yes, and it is a British Columbia licence rather than an island one, so you can pick it up from any licence agent in the province before you travel. It is valid for three months from the day it is issued, there is no residency requirement and no waiting period, and your ceremony has to be solemnized by a marriage commissioner or a registered religious representative.

Can we get married outdoors here?

Almost everywhere on this list, and most of them are built around it. Ask each venue what actually happens when the forecast turns, because the honest answer varies from a covered pavilion already on site to a tent you would be renting yourself.
