South Vancouver Island
Victoria and the coast west of it, through Sooke to Jordan River. The easiest part of the island for guests.
The place
The South Vancouver Island wedding venues in this index sit within an hour of Victoria, from farmland in the Cowichan Valley to old-growth forest and open Pacific shoreline out past Sooke.
The south end of the island is where most people arrive and where most guests will have the least trouble getting to. Victoria has the airport, the hotels and the ferry terminals, and everything else here is within an hour of it.
West of the city the coastline turns wild quickly. East Sooke, Sooke itself and the shore out toward Jordan River hold old-growth forest running down to open Pacific water, tidal pools and headlands, and the kind of scale that puts a wedding in perspective rather than competing with it. It is twenty minutes from a city and looks like nowhere near one.
The practical case for getting married here is guests. Elderly relatives, small children and people flying in from far away all manage this part of the island in a way they do not always manage the rest of it.
The index
Before you choose
Yes, and by a wide margin. Victoria has the international airport, the float plane terminal, two ferry terminals and enough hotel rooms to hold a wedding without anybody needing a plan, which matters most for elderly relatives, small children and anyone flying a long way.
Almost all of them are within an hour, and the character changes fast over that hour. Twenty minutes west of the city the coastline is open Pacific and old-growth forest, and half of the appeal is that it looks nothing like the place your guests are sleeping.
Worth doing for a summer date even though the city has plenty of rooms, because Victoria fills with cruise passengers and conferences through the same months you want. Hold a block downtown near where guests will eat and drink, and arrange transport out to the venue rather than expecting people to drive.
Drier than most of the coast and mild for most of the year, with a genuinely reliable stretch from late June to mid September. The west coast side toward Sooke and Jordan River catches more weather than the city does, so a venue twenty minutes away can be having a different day.
From any licence agent in British Columbia, including several in Victoria, and you can do it well before the wedding. The licence is valid for three months, has no residency requirement or waiting period, and the ceremony must be solemnized by a marriage commissioner or a registered religious representative.
