The place

Getting married in Tofino, Ucluelet and Bamfield.

Tofino, Ucluelet and Bamfield wedding venues sit on the open Pacific side of Vancouver Island, out past the mountains: wide beaches, rainforest, surf, and weather that is part of the plan rather than a risk to it.

The west coast is the open ocean side of the island: Tofino, Ucluelet and Bamfield, out past the mountains and the long road through the pass. Wide beaches, surf, rainforest and weather that arrives without asking.

Every venue here is used to a wedding that moves indoors an hour before it starts, and the good ones will tell you so on the first call. That is not a warning so much as the point. People choose this coast because it is dramatic, and a grey day on Long Beach is more striking than a clear one almost anywhere else.

The drive is the thing to plan around. It is several hours from the ferry to Tofino on a road that does not hurry, and in summer the town is full. Book accommodation before you book anything else.

Before you choose

What couples ask about Tofino, Ucluelet and Bamfield.

How long is the drive to Tofino, Ucluelet and Bamfield?

Tofino and Ucluelet are roughly three hours from Nanaimo on Highway 4, through Port Alberni and over the pass, on a road that does not hurry and occasionally closes. Bamfield is its own journey: an hour and a half of active logging road from Port Alberni, or the passenger ferry down the inlet, and neither is something to ask a guest to do in the dark. Add the ferry from the mainland and any of the three is most of a day from Vancouver, so build a travel day into the plan rather than asking people to drive it the morning of.

What happens if it rains?

Every venue here has an indoor answer and the good ones will tell you about it on the first call. A grey day on this coast is more striking than a clear one almost anywhere else, and couples who choose it are usually choosing the drama rather than tolerating it.

When should we book accommodation?

Before you book anything else. The towns are small, summer fills months ahead, and a venue with no beds near it is not a plan. Several couples end up choosing their date around what is available to stay in rather than the other way round.

Can we get married on a Tofino or Ucluelet beach?

In many places yes, and it needs checking case by case rather than assuming. Some beaches sit inside Pacific Rim National Park Reserve and have their own rules and permits, so ask your venue what it has done before and what it arranges on your behalf.

Is winter worth considering?

Storm season runs from about November to February and it is a genuine reason to come here rather than a fallback. Rates are lower, the towns are quiet, and the weather is the entire spectacle, but tell your guests plainly what they are signing up for.

What licence do we need?

A British Columbia marriage licence from any provincial licence agent, valid for three months, with no residency requirement and no waiting period. Sort it before you make the drive, because the choice of agents out on the coast is thin.

The rest of it

The question after where is who.

Folklore keeps a vendor guide for Tofino, Ucluelet & Bamfield: photographers, florists, caterers and planners. If you would rather hand the whole thing over, we plan weddings here too.
